The Birnova Kennel is situated in Bîrnova monastery, Iasi district.
Apart from the other obedience work: participating in services, painting icons, procession flags, epitaphs and crosses, making incense and vigil lamp wick holders, we also raise cattle, sheep and goats in our micro-farm. In time, it has become imperative that we should acquire some dogs to guard our flocks and after researching specialized literature in the field, we have reached the conclusion that a shepherd dog would be the most appropriate choice.
In December 2005 we bought two Caucasian Shepherd puppies from the Văleni Kennel, a male and a female puppy. At the same time a believer donated a female Bucovina Shepherd dog to the monastery. Our initial goal was not to deal with raising and breeding dogs but in time, these dogs were noticed by both monks visiting from other monasteries and pilgrims, and many of them required puppies.
This is how we decided to establish our own kennel, which we called "Bîrnova Kennel" and to acquire other puppies, of various genealogical lines, so that we could breed them. So we bought two Caucasian Shepherd puppies from Dermina Alex Kennel in Simleul Silvaniei and from Hunza Kennel in Poland.
We have been very satisfied with the temperament of the Bucovina Shepherd dog that we received and were encouraged to acquire other special puppies from this Romanian breed. This time we appealed to Humor Kennel and to Mr Vasiliu V, breeders of renown that have very valuable dogs from this breed.
At present the Birnova Kennel has 10 dogs, some of whom are Romanian champions: Jaguar of Văleni – Junior Champion of Romania and Amanda - Champion of Romania (both Caucasian Shepherds), and Albatros (Tarzan) – Champion of Romania, CUM LAUDAE Champion of Romania, B-Jar of Humor and B-Nora of Humor Junior Champions of Romania (all Bucovina shepherds). The other dogs will be shown in subsequent exhibitions.
